Why Plant a Tree?

As I sat here with a pen in one hand and my paper laid out before me, it dawned on me that an important part of nature had to be destroyed for me to have this luxury.

Trees.

I became curious about how trees are of benefit to our environment. I learned more than I ever knew with just a few articles.

I also learned that not only are we destroying them by our own free will on a daily basis, but ravaging fires are also destroying them quickly. Our National forests are being devoured. Wildfires have destroyed millions, yet our US Forest Service has no budget to replenish what’s been destroyed due to how much they have had to spend to fight these horrible fires.

Why Plant a Tree?

So what? Why do you care about that? Is it really that big of a deal?

Trees aren’t just parts of nature that look majestic or pretty. They are essential to environmental well being.

Tree Facts:

  • Trees assist in moderating our climate.
  • Trees improve the quality of our air. Leaves act as filters by removing dust and other particles that we would otherwise breathe.
  • Leaves absorb carbon dioxide to form carbohydrates that play a role in the plants functions and structure.
  • Leaves absorb other pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone.
  • Trees assist in water conservation so you can have a tall cool glass of water to quench your thirst when you are hot and your mouth is dry.
  • Trees are the home for our wildlife friends. This biodiversity (various forms of living organisms and species alike) is also essential to our ecosystem.
  • During heavy rainfall, trees store some of the water which reduces run off and chance of flooding.
  • Trees make our air cooler during a hot Summer day.
  • Cooling bills are lower in homes that are tree-shaded.
  • When a home has a windbreak, heating costs are also lower.
  • Landscaped homes are more valuable than non-landscaped homes. Which means that trees are also of monetary value. Increasing value of your property as well as providing you with energy savings.

There are so many advantages and worth behind a simple tree. that I couldn’t blog about them in one post. My boy friend and I have an outing planned in April to plant a tree. It is something I have never done before.

Why Plant a Tree?

It won’t make up for years of wasteful consumption, but it sure will feel nice to give something back that I have been given.

If each of us could plant just one tree, maybe our childrens children will enjoy a tall cool glass of water too.

  2. trees are really helpful. if we cut it and not replace it there will be flash floods, erosion and a very hot weather. I agree with you Kim lets start saving trees before its too late.

  3. Bill: I can’t wait. I’m glad you told me about the opportunity in April.
Joan: I didn’t realize that trees were such an influence on our environment. Really, I only knew about the advantages to our air but I never took the time to learn any more than that. Once we know these things, aren’t we then responsible?
