Stumbleupon SEO Haters Don’t Know They’re SEO’s

When I refer to “Stumble Trolls”, I am referring to the SEO haters that have banded by the masses to terrorize and otherwise exhibit threatening and hateful behavior towards SEOs.

This is a break down of the Stumbleupon “About” page. With some additional points of interest. I hope to bridge the lack of education within our Stumbleupon community as to what SEO is and does, and to show that you don’t have know you’re an SEO to be one.

First, let’s briefly address Wikipedia’s definition of Search Engine Optimization:

“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results..”

Now let’s move on to Stumbleupons service details according to Wikipedia:

“StumbleUpon uses collaborative filtering (an automated process combining *human opinions* with *machine learning* of personal preference) to create virtual communities of like-minded websurfers. Rating websites updates a personal profile (a blog-style record of rated sites) and generates peer networks of websurfers linked by common interest. These social networks coordinate the distribution of web content, such that users ’stumble upon’ pages explicitly recommended by friends and peers.”

**Wikipedia’s summary of machine learning:

“Machine learning is concerned with the design and development of algorithms and techniques that allow computers to “learn”. At a general level, there are two types of learning: inductive, and deductive. Inductive machine learning methods extract rules and patterns out of massive data sets.

The major focus of machine learning research is to extract information from data automatically, by computational and statistical methods. Hence, machine learning is closely related not only to data mining and statistics , but also theoretical computer science.”

Hmmm, could it be a search engine? Let’s see..

Wikipedia’s summary of a search engine:

“A Web search engine is a search engine designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. Information may consist of web pages, images and other types of files.

Some search engines also mine data available in newsgroups, databases, or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.”

SUs “About” page:

Searching vs. Stumbling:
“Using search engines to locate relevant content typically means hunting through pages of results. Rather than searching for quality web sites, StumbleUpon members are taken directly to web sites matching their personal interests and preferences.”

Stumbleupons SEO is performed by the individual members who participate in it’s usage.

Note the similarities…

SEOs:

  • uses relevant content to search queries
  • texting to make images more visible in SEs since they are text readers, not image readers and for reader appeal
  • using code (html and otherwise) and text to best create a specific user experience
  • using keywords to express relevancy and appeal
  • using tags to expound on relevancy and categorizing
  • reciprocal linking with other relevant sites/pages, enhancing relevancy and ranking

Stumblers:

  • uses relevant content to search queries
  • texting images to show more appeal
  • using code (html and otherwise) to best create a specific user experience
  • using keywords to express relevancy and appeal
  • using tags to expound on relevancy and categorizing
  • reciprocal linking with other relevant sites/pages enhancing relevancy and ranking

It seems some Stumblers do not realize that they render specific algorithmic manipulation and are persuasive to gain readership,as SEOs.

Tagging also manipulates algorithmic manipulation and targets a specific audience as do SEOs.

Stumblers use browser add-ons for linking, voting, promoting and, once again, algorithmic manipulation, as SEOs.

Stumblers mass message other Stumblers (even if they have not requested or registered for such service) whereas SEOs use email carriers to perform this process..although, I’ll have to add, typically the receiver has requested this service by registration and willing participation.

Heck..I think we should just call it “Stoogle
Stoogle

  9. Stumbleupon SEO Haters Don’t Know They’re SEO’s…

A post about educating the Stumbleupon community as to the truth about SEO. There are masses of SEO haters on Stumbleupon who don’t realize that they are in fact SEOs.

The author hopes to provide insight into exactly what SEO is and does, and that yo…

  10. I think the biggest problem, which you sort of allude to in here is that there are a lot of people who have no clue what SEO is. They equate it with spam, which it is not. It’s easy for them to find examples of spam, and call it SEO. The biggest difference is, when SEO is done right, not one does it not resemble spam, the average user doesn’t even notice it.

Of course, you can treat an ignorant person something if he doesn’t want to learn. It’s just a shame that are so willing to show their ignorance and manifest it such anger.

Good post here. Glad someone is fighting the fight through embracing the ignorant rather than just firing back.

  11. Thanks for taking the time to comment Geoff. I’m sorry that I haven’t replied until now. I haven’t properly set up my comments to go to a specific email so I can receive upon submission. I am doing that today.

You are very right about so many misunderstanding what SEO is exactly and they assume automatically that SEO equals spam. Not everyone in SU in against us, but for those that are…I think it is better to educate those willing to listen to what is being presented so as to clear up those doubts. For others that enjoy being uneducated, well…there’s not much that can be created by my trying to teach them because they seem to be even more hateful as a result. Go figure.

Btw, I know I’ve told you this already, but you’re ebook (The Lonely Writer)was inspirational to me. It got me to thinking about what makes me tick during down time. Thanks on that again as well.

  12. Great post! I’ve always equated SEO as just another part of building a website . . . an important part. I just don’t get the haters. Yeah, some create spam in their promotion efforts. But there is spam email too, so does that mean everyone who writes email is a spammer?
