Overcoming Dyslexia
Kimberly Bock Dyslexia is a learning disability. It is not an intellectual disability. It has shown its ugly face to persons of various intellectual levels, even those considered to be ‘highly gifted’.
1 in 10 people have dyslexic tendencies. 4% are severely affected.
Children with dyslexia have difficulty with written language due to neurological problems. Things that we take for granted such as spelling and reading become a chore for these children (and adults of course).
Other difficulties that children with dyslexia may experience:
- Poor short term memory
- auditory processing disorder
- poor organizational ability
- spoken language problems
- developmental dyspaxia
- dyscalculia / dysgraphia
- ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
It is a lifelong disorder. There is no known cure. But there is certainly evidence that those with this disorder can become achievers.
Here’s a few examples of Red Hot Achievers with dyslexia:
- Orlando Bloom
- Danny Glover
- Whoopi Goldberg
- Keanu Reeves
- Robin Williams
- Henry Winkler
- Leonardo da Vinci
- Andy Warhol
- Pablo Picasso
- Muhammad Ali
- Nolan Ryan
- Henry Ford
- William Hewlett
- Ted Turner
- Albert Einstein
- Thomas Edison
- Erin Brockovich
- George Washington
- Andrew Jackson
- George Patton
- John Lennon
- Hans Christian Anderson
- Agatha Christie
Now how can WE help children with dyslexia to become achievers?
By watching this video presentation of one mans journey through a 10,000 mile bike ride to raise the support that these children need in order to become the next Einstein, Edison or Picasso. This heroes is Paul Sanchez. aka Solorider.

He has 8 wishes to fulfill and his deadline has changed to 08/08/08.
Once you’ve watched the video you will have officially joined a class of doers rather than avoiders that complain about the condition of the worlds affairs but yet do nothing about it.

i have two friends who are classed as dyslexic, both of whom i respect greatly and love dearly. the one’s a cisco engineer and the other is one of my bosses at direct traffic media, who’s a brilliant businessman.
good post kim.
I know of a few people with this condition, a couple of which are friends of mine.
There’s less of a stigma now compared to a few years ago.
One friend was diagnosed while at collage and she was given support by the college to help her overcome her dyslexia.
She didn’t let it hold her back…
Thanks for taking the time to do this post! Its funny I forgot about that picture you posted. How did you even find the picture? I hope you find this well.
Paul
I didn’t know John Lennon had dyslexia? That’s a good one for the team. (Yes I’m a huge Beatles fan)
